Should we be scared of water - I AM
I am afraid of, no, not just afraid of, I have an unnatural fear of, sharks and water. No, not the kind of water you swim in. Well, OK, if it has or might have sharks in it, then I am scarred out of my wits of that kind of water. I love animals, but am so terrified of sharks that I probably know more about them than Jacques Cousteau because I am also addicted to knowing everything about them. I guess because I want to be prepared in case they ever get to Oklahoma. I show pictures of sharks to my dogs and say, Bad Shark, Bad Shark. But, yes, alas. Water. I am simply and absolutely terrified of water. I know that my body is mostly water and that I need water to survive and that it is the 2nd thing after air that my body must have to survive. It brings to mind an old sing-song from my childhood about someone stranded on the ocean (of course). “Water, water everywhere – and not a drop to drink.” Water. Why does the very thought of water strike fear into my very soul? Let me ask you. When you think of water, what comes to mind? For me, it is the breathtaking Shepherds Fall on the Columbia River in Oregon just ½ mile from the Washington border. Or, perhaps, the Pacific Ocean of Oregon’s coast anywhere. So, have I developed DDAUWAA (Developmental Disease Against Using Water Anywhere for Anything). Yes, and the more I study, read and hear about water, the more frightened I become. Being an avid environmentalist, (well, maybe not avid, I haven’t chained myself to a tree) I promote ways to live healthier and respect the environment. It is difficult, but not impossible. Unless you live under a rock and have 100% disconnect from the world, you hear the dangers of everyday environmental problems we face. We are bombarded with the challenges we face daily, and it is up to us to find solutions. Here are just a few of the facts. Lead is poison. The effect of lead on the human body is “biochemical changes at low levels of exposure” in government research. Lead plumbing (even the lead used to solder copper pipes) is the major cause of lead contamination of household water in U.S. homes today (states EPA pamphlet OPA 87-006). Chlorine is poison designed to kill infectious organisms. Chemicals seep into the water supply from spills and blatant pollution and chlorine is chemically reacting within the water system to form chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, bischloroethane and trihalomethanes. These are carcinogens which cause cancer. In some parts of the country, asbestos, a by-product of mining products around the Great Lakes, is present in drinking water. Cancer is higher than normal in those areas, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Ontario. Radiation has been found in the drinking water of certain municipal water systems. Nuclear Plants and dump sites are leaking radioactive waste from holding tanks into water systems of the Northwest. No one knows where or what direction the underground water travels. The government says not to worry. Over 300 different organic chemicals had been identified in American drinking water at the beginning of 2000. And that statistic was 8 years ago. Flouride is present in most American drinking water. What You Always Wanted To Know About Drinking Water,” by Kurt W. Donsbach Ph.D, states fluoride causes birth defects, heart and kidney disease, allergies, cancer, gastric distress, diarrhea, shortness of breath, stiffness of joints, fatigue, sleeplessness and skin irritations. It has now been publicly announced and research has proven that most bottled water on which we have depended on to be safe and pure for drinking and cooking is not so safe after all, but possibly no better than regular tap water. It is extremely unfortunate and irresponsible of our government and businesses to take allow the welfare of the individual to be overshadowed by the dollar. But, we see that the power of money seems to overshadow the power of wisdom in many cases. We must take responsibility for our health and at least we are in a position to take action. Today’s marketplace is rich with information and products to meet the expanding needs of water purification for home, business and travel. I remember as a little girl overhearing someone say when gas went up to fifteen cents a gallon, “Someday, the government will find a way to charge us for the very air we breathe”. And, in a twisted way, we can almost see that coming. With the expanded market for air purifiers and increased number of people in public wearing masks, who knows? I just know when I hop into the shower in the morning, I am still grateful when I turn on the water, I am grateful that I have water when there are many in the world who don’t. And, I always add a little extra grateful for my water purifier. OK, now I guess you are wondering what that has to do with my fear of Sharks. Well, you’ve read this so far and I hope you have taken this information to heart. I hope you will be vigilant in your watch over your health and the health of this planet. And, by the way, I am really, actually terrified of Sharks, so scared that when …. Oh, well, that’s another story. Bennie Jean Kuehnle
